Eliminate HSM wait
DFSMShsm is an effective DASD storage management and productivity tool that many data centers have used to automate the migration of inactive data from primary DASD to alternate storage media. However, when that migrated data is needed, HSM has to recall the data back to primary DASD, causing delays in processing as the job waits for the recall to complete.
HSM/AR can eliminate this wait by pre-staging the migrated HSM data on primary DASD so that it is readily available when needed by your production jobs. The length of this delay is dependent on which auxiliary storage the dataset has migrated to, on the availability of system resources, and also on the number of recalls issued by other tasks.
Improve batch throughput
Lengthy HSM recall delays can slow down your batch processing. HSM/AR recalls the migrated data so that your batch jobs don't wait for a recall. Batch cycles finish faster, and online processes aren't delayed.
Dramatic difference in periodic cycle times
HSM/AR offers time savings that can especially be noted when processing weekly, monthly, and yearly cycles. This data is more likely to have been migrated by HSM due to age or inactivity. Pre-staging this migrated data allows the periodic cycles to complete much faster.
HSM/AR is an intelligent tool that can determine if any of the migrated datasets it is scheduled to recall have already been recalled, and will bypass those datasets.
